Text Box: At the June 11-12 International Benchrest Shooters sanctioned match at Caledonia Forest and Stream Club on Pierce Road in St. Johnsbury, a new world record 100-/200-yard Grand Aggregate record was shot. Greg Palman of Aurora, Maine shot the new record which is a combined aggregate of targets shot at 100 yards on Saturday and 200 yards on Sunday. Palman shot a 250/23X at 100 yards and 250/15X at 200 yards to establish the new record of 500/38X. The targets were sent to the IBS records committee for verification and the new record has been confirmed.
Just to emphasize, Palman shot 50 rounds from his rifle, all of which hit the 10 ring and 38 of which hit the X. This was an amazing accomplishment which eclipsed a record that had stood since 1989.
The scoring system used in this form of benchrest shooting is called “score” shooting. A target consists of five bulls-eyes and a sighting bullseye. A shooter may fire as many shots as desired into the sighting target but can only fire one shot at each of the five scoring bullseyes and does this in five relays until five targets, totaling 25 bullseyes have been shot.
The rings on the bullseyes are numbered from 6 to 10 with the shooter getting the score value of the highest number ring he hits. At 100 yards the 10 ring is ½-inch in diameter, with a 1/16-inch dot in the center which is the X ring. If a shooter hits the 10 ring, it scores 10 points; the nine ring, nine points, etc. If a bullet hits the 1/16-inch dot it scores as an X, plus the 10. Each target has a possibility of a 50/5X score and five of these targets are shot in a match, giving a possible 250/25X for hitting the X every time.
The same holds true at 200 yards, Text Box: only the target is double in size. The 10 ring measures 1-inch and the X is 1/8-inch.
Caledonia Forest and Stream Club became a registered member club of IBS this year and is in its first season of holding benchrest shoots. Over 21 shooters have come from five states to the three events held so far this year. Benchrest shooting consists of firing custom-built target rifles from benches with sandbags and front rests. Most shooters in the Varmint For Score class use 36-45 power telescopic sights, and there are Hunter and Varmint Hunter classes which are limited to 6X scopes. The club also offers a Factory rifle class for beginning shooters.
Though these rifles are literally capable of putting every bullet in the same hole, great skill is required to judge the wind and/or mirage conditions that can move bullets ¾-inch or more at 100 yards and double that at 200.
